Weihnachtsmarkt Champignons - Christmast Market Mushrooms

A classic treat from German Christmas markets, Weihnachtsmarkt Champignons are sautéed mushrooms bursting with savory flavors. Cooked in garlic butter and often finished with a sprinkle of fresh herbs, these warm, aromatic mushrooms are served piping hot and make the perfect snack or side dish. Simple yet delicious, they're a festive favorite that captures the essence of cozy winter gatherings.

For the Mushrooms: 500  g  1 lb cremini mushrooms, cleaned and halved 1  medium shallot  finely diced 2  tbsp  clarified butter or ghee 2  tbsp  fresh parsley  chopped 1/2  tsp  sea salt freshly ground black pepper For the Garlic Sauce: 1  cup  sour cream 2  garlic cloves  minced 1/4  tsp  salt  or to taste 1/4  tsp  black pepper  or to taste 1  tbsp  fresh chives  finely chopped Prepare the Garlic Sauce: In a small bowl, mix the sour cream, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and chopped chives. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Cook the Mushrooms: Heat the clarified butter or ghee in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the diced onion and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Add the mushrooms and sauté, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and tender, about 8-10 minutes.
Season the mushrooms with salt and pepper to taste.
Remove from heat and sprinkle with fresh chives.
Serve: Transfer the mushrooms to a serving dish and drizzle with the prepared garlic sauce, or serve the sauce on the side for dipping.
Garnish with additional chives for presentation, if desired.
